Visiting beautiful Laponia in the far north of Sweden

I recently visited Laponia, a world heritage site located in the far north of Sweden. This is a beautiful location that is a must-see for nature lovers.

Laponia is a large region that consists of four national parks – Muddus, Sarek, Padjelanta and Stora Sjöfallet. I visited Stora Sjöfallet, one of the more frequented national parks that is a two hour drive west of Gällivare. Stora Sjöfallet translates to “the big sea fall,” referencing to a large waterfall that forms in the summer from snow melt.

A primary destination point in Stora Sjöfallet is Naturum Laponia, a unique structure surrounded by beautiful nature and mountain peaks. The site contains a cafe, museum, gift shop, movie viewing center and arts and crafts room. While sitting inside, visitors can purchase beverages and snacks from the cafe and enjoy stunning views seen through a large panoramic glass window. The museum contains information about near-by vegetation, wildlife, geology, as well as the indigenous people known as Sami. There are also wood paths built outside around the site so visitors can walk in comfort.

Not too far up the road visitors can have a comfy nights stay at a hotel called Stora Sjöfallet. The hotel has a large restaurant space, as well as a small convenient store.

A few minutes drive away from the museum and hotel, visitors can park along the road and walk to Stora Sjöfallet for a closer look at the waterfall. This hike is somewhat strenuous and should be taken with care. There is no paved path for those who have difficulty walking.

Be sure to check Laponia’s website for tips and recommendations when visiting. Also be sure to check Naturum Laponia’s website for opening hours, considering it tends do only be open during the summer.
